Kicking Around in Giuliettas
Back in 2006, Marvin Miller and I were wondering why there were no Giulietta-specific touring events being run here in the San Francisco Bay Area. But as “wonderings” typically go - nothing comes of them and we sit back down on our asses until something happens. Then Michele Muller came along and suggested that she’d be up to some romping about in her Giulietta Sprint. Well that was all the impetus needed; Marvin quickly drew up a route along the Santa Cruz-Pescadero stretch of the CA coast and off we went on a scenic drive in the California coastal redwoods.
Typical of Giulietta Jaunts, apparently, the cars that show up are NOT always Giuliettas. The “First-Ever” Jaunt last year sported my ’71 Spider, as well as Michele’s ’80 Spider Graduate. The spirit of the run was carried by Marvin in his recently-restored ’62 Giulietta Spider, and Steve Harrop in his ‘62(?) Giulietta SS. What was my excuse? My Giulia Spider was (and still is) under restoration. Michele’s? Something about a missing driver’s side window. So that’s how it goes for now, run what you brung, till you get the 750/101 fixed.
The Giulietta Jaunt is intended to be an annual day-run of Giuliettas in the Bay Area, with routes chosen and led by different owners for variety. Marvin designed the 2006 route, while Michele and Dave Parmenter drafted the 2007 Mt. Hamilton drive, along the way stopping at the James Lick Observatory. As for 2008? We’re waiting for volunteers.
As we become more organized, the Jaunt may grow into a larger event with more cars. We’re hoping, though, to cap it at 10-15 cars max for now. We do have one secret hope deep down, that one day we will see nothing but Giuliettas on the run; it is a jaunt for Giuliettas, after all. Those of you with Giuliettas at home - get working on them! Those of you without... Marvin would love to have you ride with him in his white-faced Sprint!
