I started the c.s.a. program in 2003 with several objectives in mind-to give people access to my produce in a way that was both economical and convenient, and also as a way to keep the farm viable in the continuing wake of the industrialization that has devastated small scale farming in Massachusetts, throughout the country, and the rest of the world.
The way the program works is,once a week through the course of the harvest season, which for me is about the first week of June threw the first week of November, you receive a drop off of a good cross selection of what we have been harvesting that particular week-which depends on at what point in the season it is-early in the year,it will be mostly greens and some early roots, but by mid-june other things start to appear such as broccoli, beets, carrots and peas-and yes,we pick the peas for you!Early in the summer you’ll start to get summer squash, cukes, spring onions and beans(again,we pick the beans for you as well)mid july fava beans, peppers, potatoes, eggplant and cherry tomatoes, and by the end of july the tomatoes and sweet corn start up.The bounty continues on in August as our melons start up and we start to include peaches and apples from our neighbors at Flat hill orchard(our own orchard will not begin bearing until 2009)September is booming with everything imaginable, and October brings the piece de resistance-the famed miataki mushrooms aka “hen of the woods.” All in all, what we try to achieve week after week is to give you an interesting assortment of greens, pods, roots and fruited vegetables for your eating pleasure!
We offer two sized shares-a small, which is good for 1-2 people-in it you get 7- 8 different items per week, and a large,in which you get 11-12 different items per week, plus double on 4 of the small share items.A small sells for only $325 for the year, and a large,$500.With either one,our aim is the same-to give you an excellent value for you dollar.
We have three pick-up locations-davis sq,somerville on tuesday, central sq,cambridge on wens, and porter sq on thursday-all pick-up times are between 6:30 and 8:15 at night. Please note that this is a farm, not a factory, and although we set out to grow all the crops we list, farming being what it is,what you receive can be subject to weather conditions, insect attacks ect.
