I need to start reading more non-school or work-related books. I’ve been picking at Empires of the Word by Nicholas Östler for a little while, and I just finished The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. If you’re going to pick up a book, though, the three pictured above are some of my favorites.
Be warned: From Dawn to Decadence is ridiculously huge. It’s great, though, especially if you have little knowledge of the literary and artistic output of Western culture and want to learn more.
A History of the Arab Peoples was a great, great book, and I wish all history books would be written with as much thoroughness and clean prose.
My personal favorite (as of right now) is The Metaphysical Club; it captures something uniquely American and inspiring in its description of the development of pragmatism in the US. It motivated me to work and write when I flip through it, like the literary equivalent of Thunder Road.
I’m looking for new books to read this fall; if you have any suggestions, I’d appreciate it if you left a comment.
