The Sherman Tank: Thunderbolt
The Sherman Tank: Thunderbolt
Several times a year, you can hear the roar of a powerful engine and the clank of tracks as the Allen County Historical Society’s 1944 M4-A3 Sherman Tank roams the streets of Lima and other communities in parades.
The tank is one of the most completely restored tanks of its kind in existence. Acquired by the Allen County Historical Society in 1957, the tank was displayed outside the Allen County Museum until 1987 when volunteers from Lima's Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, (maker of the modern M1 Abrams Tank), and the Lima Ford Engine Plant, completely restored the Sherman to mint running condition including a completely reconditioned "spare" engine. Since then, volunteers from The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center and Husky Lima Refinery, (formerly Valero), maintain an important piece of history while honoring veterans and supporting the Allen County Museum.
The Allen County Historical Society is deeply grateful to the many talented and committed volunteers that care for the Sherman and proudly share it with communities all over the state.
