The advent of the motion picture changed the way that people looked at entertainment. Prior to this invention, Americans had the theater and vaudeville, symphonies and bands, books, and amusements, (such as magic lanterns and stereoscopes), to inspire their imaginations and emotions. Moving pictures greatly increased the amount and types of entertainment available to people of all classes.
