The lady in the center of this picture is Mrs. Margaret Poague Cunningham in 1876. How does she look different from the teachers that you have had? Attending school in the 19th century was very different than it is today. Although many of the same subjects are taught, such as reading, writing, and math, early Lima schools did not have electricity, indoor plumbing, and they relied upon fireplaces or wood burning stoves for heat. Can you imagine doing your homework under the low light of a kerosene lamp? What kinds of things do schools have today that were not present in the 19th century?
