In 19th century America, the circus was a very important form of entertainment and information, especially to areas outside of major cities. It often provided a venue for the demonstration of new inventions as well as information about exotic animals that were largely unknown to people living in rural areas. We often associate P.T. Barnum with the development of the American circus, but there were actually many different circuses and owners dating back to the 18th century. The “sideshow” was added to the circus about 1850 and included what was called “oddities,” such as the world’s tallest or shortest person, or perhaps an animal with an extra limb. Why were people attracted to sideshows? Do you think that attitudes toward sideshows are different today?
