Presented by Mr. John T. Carnes
Curator of the Allen County Museum
Sunday, July 26, 2009 • 2 PM
It was the height of the Great Depression and a little known, recently paroled criminal, by the name of John Dillinger, robbed the Citizens Bank in Bluffton, Ohio. The long arm of the law tracked him down to his girlfriend’s apartment in Dayton, Ohio, where upon he was extradited back to Allen County. While awaiting trial in the county jail, Dillinger’s gang showed up to spring him, and an altercation ensued. Sheriff Jesse Sarber lost his life, while Dillinger went onto become “Public Enemy Number One.”
The Allen County Historical Society is pleased to present Mr. John T. Carnes, Curator of the Allen County Museum, who will speak on the notorious John Dillinger, and the tragic demise of Sheriff Jesse Sarber, one of Allen County’s finest. With more than twenty years experience at the Museum, Mr. Carnes is regarded as an expert on local history, as well as military history. He designed the Museum’s Sarber-Dillinger exhibit and has offered numerous presentations on the story to area groups and organizations. This program is free and open to the public.
