First task - find a grocery store. I was looking for one grocery store that is comparable to Magruders in the DC metro area and one comparable to Whole Foods/Whole Paycheck. Fortunately, I only buy peanut butter and coffee beans regularly from WF. Unadulterated pnut butter is something to try once. It’ll revolutionize your pb/j eating experience. I’m just a coffee snob. On occasion, I’ll by salad ingredients and breads from the WF bakery, too.
Magruders - what can I say? Good prices, fresh produce, fresh meats and produce, amazing deli and no frequent shopper card, not for privacy or tracking issues, but because I don’t want to carry one more tag on my keys or another membership card in my wallet. My choices in Frederick are Giant, Giant Eagle, Safeway, Super Fresh and Weis. I did not bother exploring Safeway or Giant Foods. One has to make choices. Among the Giant, Giant Eagle and Weis on the W. Patrick corridor, The Giant on W. Patrick is my pick for now even though I don’t have the bonus card and not planning on getting one yet. I have discovered that different locations of the same grocery chain can have markedly different standards and prices, so I will be trying the other locations of some of these chains. As far as coffee and peanut butter are concerned, I found Common Market. Quite reminiscent of WF, but it’s a Co-op, so I guess that means better prices? I didn’t think so when I went there. Selection is great though and I’m sure you pay for quality and, of course, the non-genetically engineered produce.

Sams Club vs. Costco. Costco wins.
