Tradition is not about preserving the ashes but carrying on the torch of fire — Gustav Mahler
Although reading and writing form the core of the AP English curriculum, we shall not study literature in isolation. Rather, a variety of critical approaches will be brought to bear on “texts” of all types. Using Gloria Fiero’s Humanistic Tradition as a guide, we will consider the historical and cultural contexts in which works are produced. We will examine and think critically about the relationship between literature and other arts, such as painting and music. We will forge connections between the arts and religious, philosophical, and scientific ideas. No subject will be considered “out-of-bounds.”

Our primary objective in this college-level interdisciplinary humanities course is to study and rigorously engage master-works of human artistic achievement and to think critically about the essential questions they pose. Our aim should be, in the words of Dr. Henry Bender, “to embrace manifold points of view on these questions, seeing in the process the struggle of humankind to find meaning and coherence in the circumstances of our shared existence.”
