Chittagong, known alternately as the “Port City” and the “Lustrous Opal of the Karnaphuli”, was the site of my recent fraud investigation trip. I had high expectations for my first foray outside of Dhaka, few of which were met. Chittagong is a less developed, louder version of Dhaka, although the hotel and restaurants were very good. Getting there and back was a snap, a forty minute flight on United Airways, one of many domestic airlines plying the route. United Airways, by the way, is looking for investors. Investing as little as 5 lakh taka (about 7,000 dollars), will entitle you not only to two free tickets per year, for life, but will also allow you 22 pounds of excess baggage per flight. Note: This blog is neither endorsing nor recommending this as a suitable investment vehicle. Please read the prospectus before making an investment decision. The most interesting part of the trip was trying to locate a Buddhist monastery about two hours out of Chittagong and a forty minute walk from the nearest road through fallow rice paddies. The road from Chittagong and back was clogged with traffic, exacerbated by the movement of sacrificial animals to the cattle markets ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha holiday. After two full days of driving in Chittagong and environs, I was happy to return to the relative sanity of Dhaka. lk
