THE MAKING OF “THE WATERHORSE”: the Cinematographers Pages
In essence, the idea was to shoot the “Loch Ness” material near Queenstown, New Zealand. Queenstown is a popular tourist destination on the South Island so has the kind of hotel accommodation that can cope with more than 150 NZ film crew. However, the locations were so far away from town that each day was a 20 minute bus ride, a 20 minute boat ride and then another 20 minute bus ride! Whilst most of the time this made sense, for the night it seemed strange to travel so far and then see a small strip of beach and then water rapidly going out to blackness.
Everything else was done in the studio and in this large “wet-set” tank that was created in the Car Park (same Car Park they shot King Kong in!). It was the first movie I have been involved in where the lead character didn’t have a trailer... The Monster for us was often a tennis ball and sometimes a large blue head on the end of a long pole. The man driving the jet-ski in the above photo has young Alex on the front who is riding the monster!
The shoot took a great deal of “suspension of disbelief”.... it was extremely challenging and a great privilege to work with all the “Jackson trained” people of Wellington, New Zealand.
