Community Policing

Boise has a Community Policing program that encourages neighborhoods to work closely with a single contact officer to solve problems in their areas.  Soon after we organized our neighborhood, we established a close relationship with our neighborhood police officers.  

 

This partnership has been extremely successful at identifying and solving problems in the neighborhood, such as nuisance houses.  Our contact officers have made a point of attending our meetings to stay in touch with neighbors and learn their concerns.  Our current Neighborhood Contact Officer is Jermaine Galloway.

 

 

Neighborhood Cleanup Day

Following up immediately on an action item in our neighborhood plan, area volunteers held a cleanup day on May 22, 2004. Our neighborhood plan called for investigating an area cleanup day, and less than five months after the Plan’s adoption by City Council, we held our first event, during which neighbors picked up trash, cleaned alleys, trimmed overgrown weeds, and provided for dropoff of household hazardous waste and recycling.  About 25 neighbors helped in this effort, with many others taking the opportunity to clean up their properties.  Streets, alleys, and yards looked much better as the event ended at noon. A barbecue was held after the cleanup day for the neighborhood volunteers and a door prize drawing was held for a gift certificate from a neighborhood hardware store.  The event was repeated in 2005 and 2006.  We thank our sponsors: Boise City, Ada County, Allied Waste Services, Euclid Avenue Church of the Nazarene, and Lucy’s Coffee.

 

Neighborhood Plan

In December of 2001 we formed a committee to develop a vision of our area for the next 20 years or so.  In the fall of the following year, our draft was presented to neighbors and to Boise City Neighborhood Planner Lance Evans.  Lance urged us to develop a full-blown neighborhood plan that could be adopted into the City’s Comprehensive Plan.  In February 2004, we kicked off the effort at a neighborhood meeting.  A draft plan was presented to the neighborhood in June and the final plan was turned over to the City for review in August.  In January 2004, City Council adopted our plan.

 

The plan called for two major land-use changes in the Original South Boise neighborhood.  The first was the deletion of a section of the Boise Comprehensive Plan that called for rezoning this primarily single-family neighborhood for multi-family housing for Boise State University.  

 

The second change was a rezone of our R-2 (duplex) zoned areas to R-2D duplex with design review) so that new duplexes would fit better into the existing neighborhood of mostly small cottages.  The rezone was approved by City Council on June 1, 2004.

 

The plan also detailed numerous improvement projects and a continuation of our current programs.
