Since 2001, Original South Boise has participated in the Releaf Boise program. The Boise Community Forestry Division provides free street trees to be planted by volunteers in early October. Our trees have been planted by volunteer residents of our own neighborhood. Property owners are responsible for care and maintenance of the trees. Since 2001, almost 50 trees have been planted within our borders and almost all have survived. Over time these trees will provide beauty and a fine shade canopy for our streets.
Volunteer arboretums
Neighbors cultivate volunteer trees and shrubs to share with others in the neighborhood. We are able to “green up” our area this way for a minimal cost.
Street gardens
The Original South Boise neighborhood has many sidewalks which are separated from the street by a landscaping strip. To beautify these often-neglected strips, we started a program to develop low-water, low-maintenance and low-cost landscaping plans for them. Working with Boise State University horticulture students and on our own, we have developed seven of these “street gardens” in the last two years. We hope to put these plans into book form so they can be shared with other property owners.
