The Original South Boise neighborhood is located about three blocks south of the Boise River near the heart of downtown Boise. Our boundaries are Beacon Street, Broadway, and Boise Avenues. The triangular neighborhood is within walking distance of downtown, the Greenbelt riverfront park system, the Parkcenter office park, and Boise State University.
Mixed-use neighborhood Within our 33 blocks are homes, duplexes, apartments, offices, churches, restaurants, and retail businesses. St Luke’s Regional Medical Center is located about four blocks north of the Boise River on Broadway Avenue. We are on the city bus line.
Variety of housing styles Since the neighborhood has developed continually since 1890, homes reflect a rich variety of styles, from Victorian to bungalow, mission to small cottages. We are one of Boise’s most affordable older neighborhoods. The last few years have seen a renaissance in home improvement as young families have bought houses and fixed them up.
Inexpensive irrigation Many property owners have access to irrigation water from the Mill Ditch, which meanders through the neighborhood in a northwesterly direction. Owners may buy a share from the South Boise Water Company, a non-profit mutual company whose water right dates back to the mid-1860s. The water flows from April to October and is a fraction of the cost of city water.
