Breathing Techniques

Ujjayi translates as “what clears the throat and masters the chest” and is referred to as the “Victory Breath”. It is the main method of breathing practiced in yoga -often characterized by an audibly low, deep, hollow sound stemming from the back of the throat.

TO PRACTICE MAKING THE UJJAYI SOUND:
(do each step a few times; 8-12 times)

1. Inhale through the nose, exhale through an open mouth whispering the sound “hhhhhha”
2. Exhale through the nose, inhale through the mouth breathing in the sound “rrrrrrrr”
3. Put steps 1 and 2 together; exhale the sound “hhhhhha” and inhale “rrrrrrr”
4. Repeat step 3, inhale the “rrrrrrr”, exhale “hhhhhha”, this time closing the mouth as you exhale, maintaining
     the whispered sound.

NOTE: the “hhhhhha” is a whisper-like aspirant “h” sound
the “rrrrrrrrr” sound is similar, and is made by placing your mouth in the shape
it would be if you were making an “rr” sound, and then softly breathed in, as
though through a straw; it will sound like the wind through the trees

*****
*If dizziness occurs return to following a normal rhythmic breath
until you are ready to continue
