Breathing Techniques

It is possible when working with the breath to fix the ratio between the inhalation, retention, exhalation, and suspension. When the ratio between each component of the breathing cycle is fixed to be the same, this is called samavritti, or “same wave” breathing; for example, breathe in for a count of 7, retain the breath at the top for a count of 7, breathe out for a count of 7, and suspend the breath at the bottom for a count of 7.

TO PRACTICE SAMAVRITTI
(do each step a few times; 8-12 times; continuing to the next only when ready)

1. Begin with the inhale/exhale: make the sound and length of each the same
2. Bring awareness into the quiet at the top & bottom of the breath; notice the pause
3. Slowly begin to lengthen the pauses until they are even with the in/out breath
4. After some time, rest; breathe normally, with awareness; Meditate.

*****
*This breath includes breath retentions and suspensions. If dizziness occurs return
to following a normal rhythmic breath until you are ready to continue.
