Breathing Techniques

Kapalabhati is a breathing technique used specifically for cleaning. The breath is deliberately confined to the abdominal/diaphragm area. Using the lungs as a pump, the air is forcibly exhaled. The exhalation should be short, active, audible and strong; while the inhalation, which occurs spontaneously, is longer, passive, and silent. Succinctly, the action is to draw/pump the navel in toward the spine in a series of rapid, emphasized exhales.

Bhastrika means “bellows”. This is a powerful, invigorating breath which shares many similarities to Kapalabhati, however there are important distinctions: firstly, Kapalabhati is a basic breath, suitable for beginner and novice, while Bhastrika is a more advanced breathing technique. Here, the lungs are pumped faster and more forcefully, using ALL the muscles of the respiratory system. The inhale and exhale are both active, with an equal emphasis on each.
