The latest addition to the growing ranks of tribute bands is Numanoidz - a musical homage to the electro god Gary Numan, or more precisely, his earlier work much of which recorded as Tubeway Army. Basing their act heavily around the seminal 1979 album Replicas, Numanoidz accurately reproduce the sound that made Numan a superstar.
At their debut in The Green Room this week they attracted an impressive volume of Numan fans, alongside the expected family and friends, and treated them to some futurist classics, unperformed in this manner for many years, since Mr Numan himself' grunged up' his sound. Naturally, the major hits Are Friends Electric? and Cars were performed, also presented were the album tracks Me I Disconnect From You, Films and Something's In The House in a very well received 40 minute set. The band, in regulation black clothing, looked pretty authentic and the projections gave the evening a professional air, showing dedication & attention to detail. To learn that the whole event was arranged and realised in a very short space of time was impressive. Being a debut the show wasn't as slick as the band would have wished, but good will and a genuine enthusiasm shone through. An auspicious start to a promising career. Numanoidz will explode into your orbit like a laser-guided asteroid.
Forming a tribute act is always fraught with problems, particularly if the act is still around and performing. What material should be performed? To what extent should you 'dress up'? Why would fans want see a copy when the original is still around?
This six man line-up employ banks of keyboards alongside the regular guitar, bass and drums to recreate that classic synth-heavy sound. A lot of work has gone into 'replicating' the original keyboard tones and the hard graft has paidoff.
