Oaxaca: Culture
Art and Tradition

Experience Mexico Through the Eyes of Artist
& Oaxaca Cultural Navigator Norma Hawthorne
For part of the year, my home is in Teotitlan del Valle, the famous Zapotec rug weaving village located about 18 miles southeast of Oaxaca City off the Pan American Highway 190. I have discovered great weaving, carving and textile families of the region -- some are “famous” and others are “off the beaten path” rarely visited by crowded tour buses and commission paid guides.

We create experiences for learning, discovering and exploring the arts and culture through immersion workshops located in the Zapotec village of Teotitlan del Valle. Programs are available for individuals and small groups, for teachers and students, and anyone interested in experimenting with new creative approaches. We work with universities to offer study abroad experiences in weaving, natural dyeing, sustainable agriculture, and other programs.

Here is a snippet video of the Danza de Flor de Pina, a traditional Mexican dance performed by students at the secondary school graduation in July 2008.
