Fork & Heel
Back to Preface
The trek to Upper Sydenham took Climpson and O.M almost an hour and a half, both having decided to eschew the convenience of a hansom cab to avoid arousing the curiosity of the cabman or anyone happening to be in the vicinity of the tunnel they both now referred to as 'Schuster #5'.
Climpson, laboring under the weight of a backpack containing clothes, food and medical equipment struggled to keep up with Odham MacGuinness as he clambered over walls and pushed his way through brambles and hedgerow, all the time clutching the map found in the chalet at Shardeloes. Several times Climpson cursed the day he met O.M and Butler Smith, and when a section of his coat became snagged and torn on a sharp branch it was all O.M could do to stop Climpson throwing the rucksack to the floor and heading back the way they had come. Odham MacGuinness persuaded his disgruntled friend to rest and eat some of the sandwiches they had packed. They were in the process of unpacking the rucksack when Climpson seized his companions arm and pulled him down into a crouch. Motioning O.M to remain silent, he pointed towards a large fallen oak tree about 200 yards away. At first O.M could see nothing but then he gave a quiet gasp as he saw what his friend had keenly spotted;
Moving within the large hole created by the oak’ s massive upturned roots was the figure of a man.
The man's movements were furtive and deliberate and the two observers didn't need to wait to see if the figure was overly endowed in the trouser area to know that they were watching Butler Smith's companion and fellow fugitive, Mr Jolly.
Slowly Climpson and O.M began to edge closer towards the fallen tree, both now grateful for the cover the thick undergrowth afforded them. As they drew nearer they could clearly hear Mr Jolly's voice, evidently speaking to someone concealed within the root hole.
As they continued to draw nearer, O.M noticed something odd about the ground a short distance in front of them; a deep furrow had been formed as if something large and heavy had been dragged along. The furrow skirted around a couple of bushes before finally disappearing behind the fallen tree. Odham MacGuinness was about to draw Climpsons attention to the strange trail when he suddenly became aware Mr Jolly had fallen silent, he looked up to see Jolly staring directly at them both. For a long second all three froze and then with a loud curse and some trouser fumbling, Jolly disappeared into the hole.
Wasting no time Climson and O.M broke from their cover and ran towards the spot where seconds before Mr Jolly had been urinating.
