How We Started
The CEO and President of Nightclub Security Consultants is an 18-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department. In 1998, he came in contact with a bar security worker who he had to arrest for assault. Robert soon discovered that there were plenty of training programs available for bartenders and other alcohol servers but there was nothing for the security and safety side of the hospitality industry. He contacted several trade publications, liquor liability attorneys, media outlets and individual bar and club owners and asked several questions.
After 4 months of research, the answers to the questions pointed in one direction; the one person who needed proper training the most didn’t have anything available. The employee given the difficult and oftentimes dangerous job of keeping the patrons, the employees and the venue safe was given the title of Bouncer and told to go to work! Robert found that there wasn’t another job or another industry that has as much violence and interaction with potential violent persons than the security workers or Bouncers in the nightclub and bar industry. There is almost no other industry that is so heavily regulated and so heavily scrutinized as the alcohol service industry. However, even with considerable legal and political pressure, there were no training requirements, no training standards and no training available to the smart proactive manager or owner who wanted to train their employees.
Robert then visited with several owners and managers in and around San Diego. He consulted with attorney’s who represented defendants and plaintiffs and finally, he reviewed police academy training curriculums from around the country. The research first helped create the philosophy of the company and then helped to create the first true training specifically aimed at the hospitality security worker or HOST.
In fall of 1998, Robert gave his first 6 hour training session to a group of DeJa Vu Gentlemen’s club employees in San Diego. The training was so well received by the employees that club managers asked for additional training. From that first 6 hour session, Nightclub Security Consultants has expanded their training portfolio to its current 11-hour HOST Training™ program, their 6 hour Advanced Role Play training session and implemented a partnership with an e-learning company named 360 Training to develop online job specific training for alcohol service employees.
