HMRC Investigations and Enquiries was published August 2008 - so it’s a bit old now as so much new legislation came into force in April 2009.

It is targeted at agents rather than individuals being investigated, but if you are unfortunate enough to be clobbered by HMRC this will be a valuable sauce of information. It’s written in clear English and is well laid out, the chapter on meetings by former Investigation officer Chris Chadburn is must reading - if I had read this three years ago I’d have saved myself a lot of pain! Yes, there is a hefty price tag, but you could easily pay this for an hour of an accountant’s time.

Amazon says: The book is “accessible, user-friendly, and written to be used in practice, it supplies a huge amount of guidance on all aspects of HMRC's investigative work... The practical advice covers interviews with HMRC, revenue information powers, tax appeals and settlement negotiations.”

Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act you can read large chunks of HMRC’s Enquiry Manual, which is the book HMRC officers use to process their cases.

The blurb says: “A nightmare vision of the excesses of modern bureaucracy wedded to the mad agendas of twentieth-century totalitarian regimes.”

Well, this is a start to understanding how HMRC can work with their investigations. It would be funny - if it wasn’t true. beckham.htmlhttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Trial-Vintage-Classics-Franz-Kafka/dp/0099428644/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203282235&sr=8-4shapeimage_1_link_0

This e-book is bang up-to-date and has been checked over by top tax experts for accuracy. In under 30 practical pages the book tells it like it is.

Mark McLaughlin, Managing Editor of TaxationWeb says, “This book says a lot of things that many accountants and tax advisers would like to say to the Revenue just before they retired!”

The book only costs £10 - crikey that’s what most tax advisers charge for putting the kettle on! More here.
