Creating a portrait... of yourself, your family, your children... is an intimate experience. Or, it should be. A portrait that you’ve commissioned to hang over the mantel, in the family room, or in your office is a moment frozen in time of yourself or those you love most. My intention has always been to weave into the portrait some truth about that individual... the dynamic of a close and loving family, or the affection shared by siblings... to capture not just the physical image. This is not possible without having spent some time with those who are being photographed... being present and getting to know them on a deeper level than client/photographer. It’s about trust, and it’s about creating a lasting image that reflects more than just a physical presence.
Within the portrait contract is a provision allowing for “a sufficient amount of time” so that we can spend some time together before the day of the shoot. Perhaps we will sit in your office or living room and talk for an hour or so or take a walk together. Just enough time so that I can become familiar with you and you can become familiar with me. This is particularly important with children... to have a short amount of time just to become acquainted with the child so that when I arrive to photograph the portrait I will not be a stranger. That earlier visit may be just enough to establish a sense of trust in a child and that trust can yield amazing results. The day of the sitting as we gather to take the photograph is an exciting time. There is a feeling of familiarity, a sense of comfort and trust... and being a part of the collaborative process. The results can be stunning.
A studio is available, however I prefer shooting portraits in your environment... indoors or out. Being photographed can be unsettling or uncomfortable. The comfort level in your home or office or your favorite hiking trail provides a more interesting visual environment and one that is familiar and comforting.
