Welcome to

Newberry House

Welcome to the Newberry House web site.  We are a group of people who living in a “simplified co-housing” community, a cooperative household setting, at the edge of Portland, in a place with a country feel and seven acres. (We're 20 minutes from the center of town. To learn more about the location and area, follow the "Location & Directions" link.)

Many of us have kicked around the idea of living in sort of a co-housing (not communal) home situation for some time, and have been drawn to living in the country. But for many of us, our lives and friends are in the city, and the high costs of the co-housing has been somewhat of a deterrent.  We’re wanting something a little simpler, a little less middle class looking, a little more rural, a little more queer, a little more alternative thinking & feeling...

The vision is to live in a place where we're committed to sustainable living, simpler living, and living interdependently enough that life is easier and richer through cooperation, without living so cooperatively that it is a constant project.

We have seven acres at the edge of Portland. It started with an old farmhouse in very bad repair. Now it's rustic and beautiful!. It's on Newberry Road, so we call it "Newberry House". It's not a farm, most of it is second growth forest, and it's sloped, so it’s "in the woods". Each person has his or her own private small structure somewhere on the land, and we' all share the house as common space. We have a lot of garden space, open space, and woods to share. We are creating a nice place to live that's quiet and at the edge of town.   For more information about the place, see our “Land & Buildings” page.
