2011 Hall of Fame

Guy Shipler

Guy Shipler was known as the dean of the capital press corps, a distinction gained from seven decades in journalism and bylines in some of the nation’s most prestigious publications.

Shipler resided in Carson City from 1956 until his death in 1996. His bust sits inside the front entrance of Nevada’s capitol.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he began his career in 1937 by writing for “The Churchmen,” a publication of his father, the Rev. Dr. Guy Emery Shipler.

He was hired by Newsweek in 1941 as an education and religion editor, then switched to Time in New York City in 1944 and wrote for almost every department in the magazine. He went to work for Business Week in 1947 and became editor of the Personal Business section.

Among the people he interviewed during his career were presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, as well as movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable.

Although much of his writing appeared in national magazines — he remained a regional correspondent for Time, Life, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune and freelanced for others — Shipler for years wrote a weekly column on Nevada politics from Carson City that appeared in newspapers around the state.

He did more than write about politics, however. He served as chairman of the state’s judicial discipline commission and was well-respected for his integrity.

“His positive influence elevated the profession, and I don’t hesitate to say he was also an unerring moral compass for we elected officials,” said former Gov. Bob Miller. “His leadership on the Commission for Judicial Discipline speaks to his honesty, strength and courage.”

Mark Lundahl

Through Mark Lundahl’s career from night cops reporter at the San Bernadino Sun to managing editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal, his passion for writing about people and their stories never wavered.

Born in Rockford, Ill., in 1953, he graduated from the University of Redlands. Lundahl was a staff writer at the Sun before joining the Reno newspaper, where he was named city editor in 1994 and spent a total of 23 years in a variety of supervising and editing positions. At the time of his death in 2010, he was also president of the Nevada Press Association.

Lundahl’s calm and compassion, his attention to detail in the stories he wrote and edited, and his knowledge of local history made him a leader by example in the newsroom.

His love of words and music combined for a natural outlet in his coverage of music festivals and events. Even as managing editor, he reported from the Burning Man festival and found stories no one else was telling.

"Mark was a master of finding the human element of a story," RGJ executive editor Beryl Love said. "When covering Burning Man, it's easy to get lost in the spectacle and the dust storms. But Mark told the story through the characters who bring the festival to life. He was a champion for connecting with readers on a personal level."

As his friends noted: “Lundahl was on a first-name basis with governors and janitors. He could interview a president and then spend an afternoon in a melon field chatting with migrant workers. He covered floods and fires, homicides and concerts, times of great joy and periods of crushing sorrow.”

“Mark was a beacon in this organization for fairness in the news and for his staff.”

John Smetana

John Smetana, whose 40-year journalism career included 21 at the Reno Gazette-Journal, was the kind of newsman who made things better — the stories he edited, the newspapers he worked for, the reporters he mentored.

Born in 1943 in Melrose Park, Ill., Smetana was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and served in Vietnam with the 11th Armored Cavalry “Blackhorse” Regiment, for which he received a Bronze Star and other medals. He studied journalism at the University of Illinois and began his career in that state, later becoming city editor for the Hollywood, Fla., Sun-Tattler. He started at the Gazette-Journal in 1990 and worked on the sports, copy and city desks over the years.

After surviving a double lung transplant in 2005, he returned to work and was night city editor at the RGJ when he died in March of this year.

His colleagues recalled a gruff and exacting journalist who could be as kind as he was tough.

“Had it not been for his guidance and tutelage during those early years of my career — and my adult life — I wouldn’t be the person I am today,” said Jane Jankowski, who had worked for him in Illinois. “John helped many a young reporter who would say the same. He was the last of a breed.”

Frank X. Mullen Jr., a colleague who wrote Smetana’s obituary, described the kind of desk editor whom few people see, but that make up the heart of a newspaper.

“Smetana never won a Pulitzer Prize,” Mullen wrote, “and, as an editor, had few bylines. But when folks with problems called the news desk, especially veterans, senior citizens, parents or the disenfranchised, he quickly assigned the stories to reporters.

“For 40 years, he comforted the afflicted and afflicted the comfortable.”

Hands down, this is the winner. This is one of the most compelling and at the same time, disturbing, investigative series I have read. Best Spot News Story

  1. 1.Henry Brean, Las Vegas Review-Journal

“Children, babysitter die”

“This reporter did a great job at telling the story — not just recounting official information. I felt like I was at the scene of the fire, watching as neighbors tried to put it out and emergency crews arrived too late. The quotes were great and the accompanying video was a nice touch. This story stayed with me after I read it, and I ended up going back to find out what happened after that first day.”

  1. 2.Martha Bellisle, Reno Gazette-Journal

“Biela gets death”

“This was a great package of information put together in an easy to read manner that didn't bog down the reader with court jargon. It was nice to finish reading and know what all sides were feeling.”

“Sisters grieve over loved ones' deaths”

“This reporter gained great access to not just the family of a recent murder victim but also the location the crime occurred in — before it was cleaned up. Best Explanatory Journalism

  1. 1.Keith Rogers, Las Vegas Review-Journal

“Nevada Test Site: 60th anniversary”

“This reporter is able to weave good storytelling, statistics, history and anecdotes into one story without overwhelming the reader. I was impressed by his ability to turn subjects that could be so niche — Cold War history, high-tech science, etc. — and make it readable and understandable for the average person.”

  1. 2.Joan Whitely, Las Vegas Review-Journal

“Family remembers worker as officials close files on fatal fall”

“These stories successfully reported on what is obviously a compelling news subject while explaining very technical details surrounding the man's death. The reporter has good sensibilities on what the reader wants. She doesn't overwrite or dramatize the situation where others might but instead uses crisp wording and good quotes to tell the story. Also, great investigative work.”

  1. 3.Jeff DeLong, Reno Gazette-Journal

“Urban Bears”

“Fascinating subject. This is a wonderful package that I assume was enterprised by the reporter himself. He successfully shows the reader what is different about these bears and why it matters. Meanwhile, the topical sidebars explain the many community issues that intersect with the bear world. Also, the first-person encounter stories was a great use of reader input.”

  1. 3.Beryl Love, Lauren Gustus, Jason Hidalgo, Bill O'Driscoll, Michael Martinez, Mark Robison, Reno Gazette-Journal

“Reno 2020 Project”

“The remodeling of  a society and a community needs vision. The Gazette-Journal did a thorough job of exposing the present and laying out the map to a possible future. No stone was left unturned with perhaps the exception of a reader poll to garner the layman's opinions. “I had a hard time picking between two photos for third place. I ended up picking this one because it definitely grabbed my attention when I saw it. I thought it was ironic that the photographer mentioned in the column that it was hard getting  photos from a porn convention that could run in a family newspaper. Nevada must have a different definition of a family newspaper than Utah does because I can guarantee that no newspaper here would be able to run it.”
