Dr Paul W. Miller MD BCh BAO DMH (Belfast) MRCPsych

Welcome to ABEO. Here is some of the clinical information about me and my
qualifications. Essentially, after learning some tough lessons through my life
journey so far I took a look at what is out there in the clinical arena for people
who are going through tough challenges. It was a big challenge to me as
a mental health professional as I saw a gap between what was needed
                         and what was being provided.

My mission statement for myself and for ABEO is:

“My Mission is to create a World of unconditional love & acceptance by connecting people to truth; God and each other.”

I read Medicine at the Queen's University of Belfast, qualifying in 1994. Subsequently I obtained a Diploma in Mental Health (QUB) and was elected to Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1999. I work in both General Adult Psychiatry and Old Age Psychiatry in the Private Sector (with a special interest in trauma work).

I have a special interest in the psychological impact of trauma and am an expert practitioner in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. I am an EMDR Europe Approved Consultant and EMDR Institute Facilitator (USA). I set up several NHS-based EMDR clinics and also provide supervision to a number of EMDR therapists; including those based in the UK & Ireland. Currently I am developing research and protocols on using EMDR in psychosis and have presented some initial clinical cases in Paris at the EMDRE meeting in 2007 & the 2009 meeting in Amsterdam.

My involvement with the Genetic Epidemiology of Mental Illness in Northern Ireland (GEMINI) Research Project - an international collaboration between Professor Kenneth Kendler - Virginia Commonwealth University, and Dr Tony O'Neill - The Queen's University of Belfast and The Mater Hospital Belfast, led to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 2006.

I am involved in university level education as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Queen’s University of Belfast and also teach on the specialist trauma module at the University of Ulster - Magee Campus.

Using my charitable, clinical and academic experience I provided advice on mental health matters in my role as Senior Advisor on Health to the then Chair of the Health, Social Services & Public Safety Statutory Committee, Iris Robinson MP MLA and gave evidence to the committee in the area of suicide.

In 2005-6 I developed and led a suicide prevention project for, a Northern Ireland charity. The project worked with young men in the 16 to 25-year-old age group delivering training and awareness in the area of positive mental health in workshop and residential settings.

ABEO is my way of giving back to the society that I grew up in and operates as a not-for-profit organization. It was set up in April 2007.

“Change yourself and in doing so, change the whole World!” - me
