A Brief Life

I began practicing Asanas, if not technically Yoga, when I was 8 years old. I remember, perhaps faultily, my older sister coming home from school one day, putting her legs into padmasana (lotus pose), and saying, “this is Yogurt!” I said, “I can do that!”, and have done it ever since.

That was in 1960, and for years, from what I could find in books, television, and experience, I added shoulder stand, cobra, and basic poses, all done in the spirit of intense good physical feeling.

It was an adjunct to daily life, not the main event.

It wasn’t until I decided to take classes and lessons later in life, as the practice grew “serious”, that injuries began to occur. These days I’m practicing in the same spirit I began with - good feeling is the only motivation - because the energy that this practice is supposed to stimulate only feels good.

I’ve had 200 - hour and additional 100 hour teacher training at the Omega Institiute in Rhinebeck, New York, and in Nosara, Costa Rica with  Don and Amba Stapleton of the Nosara Yoga Institute, who encourage devising one’s own approach and style, which is the only way I can operate. I’ve had additional teacher training with Shiva Rea and Rodney Yee, and I have studied with Ana Forrest and the magnificent Mary Dunn of the Iyengar Yoga Institute  of New York City.
