In 2005, I proposed for a Research Cluster Minigrant in collaboration with David Voelz (EE), Jeff Drake (USDA), and Jim Murphy (Astronomy).  We were awarded $25,000 for the development of PHIL, the Portable Hyperspectral Imaging Laboratory, which is a portable, AOTF-based imaging system.  One of our objectives was to use PHIL to image dust storms from the Jornada Experimental Range north of Las Cruces.  Studying the spectral and scattering properties of the local dust will provide us with a proof-of-concept for applications to dust studies on the surface of Mars.  These pictures were taken on June 15, 2006, which was our first attempt at imaging dust devils with PHIL.  They will be updated as we repeat the field experiment later in the summer.
