Mariah Schuette
I live a crazy life. . .actually, more like multiple lives. I am currently a student at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. I’m an Animal Behavior major, and I have no idea what I want to do with that degree, but I have a huge passion for animals, and definitely want to work with them. I love school now; I transferred to Towson from Skidmore in New York, and while I miss some of my friends there, am SO glad that I did. I really enjoy learning here and cannot believe how quickly the semesters fly by! However, as important and interesting as school is. . . it often gets pushed into the background by my other lives. Second to being a full time student, I am also a full time athlete. Not only do I train and compete in slalom kayaking year round, I also play field hockey for the university, and rock climb, do yoga, and ski when I can squeeze them in. I started playing field hockey my freshman year of high school and have loved it ever since. It’s a challenging sport physically, being almost exactly like soccer, as well as skill wise. But the thing I like the most is that it allows me to continue to work with a team. Being on a team is incredibly rewarding, and has introduced me to some of my closest friends. Field Hockey pretty much takes the main role during the fall, and I never have as much time in a boat as I would like, but I only have a few years left to play and I want to make the most of them. Then there’s kayaking, and I think I would be lost without it. Kayaking evokes so much emotion from me. It gives me an incredible amount of joy and excitement when I’m comfortable in my boat and on the water. And it gives me so much happiness and peace when I’m around all the incredible people I’ve met through it. It challenges me and makes me nervous and even scared sometimes, which I love too because it allows me to overcome my fears. And it gives me so much confidence and even pride to be able to say I’ve done some of the things that I have through paddling. Not to mention it’s almost always an adrenaline rush as well as great exercise. Kayaking has really become a passion for me over the last few years, and not just the actual paddling but everything that comes with it: the traveling, the people, the opportunities, and the chance to really make it somewhere as an athlete. . . I’m so happy to be where I am today, and I can’t wait to see where my life (or lives) takes me.
A little About Me!
My Personal Motto:
“Achievement is not always defined by victory. Sometimes achievement lies in the honest endeavor to do your best, under all circumstances, knowing that on any given day, intense personal effort may be the only thing that separates you from your competition. To be your best, grab your paddle and get moving.” ~ Orison Swett Marden
