On the Long Road Home
Saturday, June 30, 2007

We began the long trip home this morning, departing Dale’s house at 7:30 AM. As I write this, Dad’s driving through Virginia on Interstate 81, mile marker 210, about an hour from Roanoke. We still don’t know how long we’re going to travel today, but so far (4:15 PM) we feel pretty good and not too worn out.

We did have a mishap right after crossing into Virginia. I was driving in the left lane, and a large RV mobile home beside us crossed over into our lane and bumped us. Fortunately, the damage was superficial, a ding in the right passenger door and scrape on the front right panel. We stopped and exchanged information with the other party and got back on the road quickly. They were from New York, traveling down to South Carolina. I think everything will be fine and Mom’s car easily repaired.

Well, I think Dad’s getting tired of this shift, so I’ll probably be relieving him soon. We’ll keep trucking along as long as we can stay alert and rested.

Update Saturday late night: We stopped in Tennessee for the night about 10:30. We’re just beyond Knoxville, so I estimate we will make it home Sunday night before 9:00, if we do not have any unforeseen situations.
