A Safe Home for Nancy

THE CRISIS IN A NUTSHELL

As a storyteller, Nancy Donoval specializes in finding the funny in the hard stuff, using humor to tell stories of dark and difficult life moments.  She is in the midst of a pretty dark life moment right now which she hopes will make for a funny story down the line because right now, not so much.

Nancy has MCS, a federally-recognized disability called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, which makes finding environmentally safe housing extremely tough to do. She must move from where she’s lived safely the last several years.  The need to move has caused a domino effect of health, housing and financial crises.

A safe home is the only way Nancy will be able to continue telling stories, teaching workshops, earning a living, being in the world.   She’s found an apartment that can be made safe but it needs a lot of work before it is.  Which is why ...

FALL ’09 ALMOST HOME UPDATE

- GOOD NEWS

I have moved! For a while there, it seemed like it would never happen but thanks to everyone who helped it did. There are still rooms I can’t use and environmental issues to be solved but I’m doing okay in the part I’m living in which feels like a miracle. I can’t thank all of you enough for making this possible.

- HELP STILL NEEDED

As I work to rebuild my life, health and career after this all-consuming crisis, it seems I am not yet through with needing help to get me back on my feet -- metaphorically and literally. Getting the apartment ready and finally moving has left me destitute. It’s such an odd word and one I never thought would apply to me. It sounds like something out of a silent film with the dastardly villain twirling his mustache the dialogue card reading “You must pay the rent!” as the big-eyed heroine shrinks back and mouths “But I can’t pay the rent!” Only it’s not just the rent, it’s also medical bills, health insurance, and the last round of expenses from work in the apartment. Every penny I had along with every penny donated has gone into making the apartment safe and, as generous as everyone has been, it hasn’t been enough to cover all the costs and I am left very deeply in the hole. I am cautiously optimistic about the long-term future; I’m starting to get some bookings in 2010. But in the near-term, I face the very real possibility of losing my health insurance and the apartment we’ve worked so hard to make safe for me.
