“Taking Acting A Stage Further”
Welcome to the NADS Website, a place for you to find out what's on, who's who, how to become a member, learn about our Youth Section (NADYS), past productions, our long and distinguished history and some useful links.
All our publicity material now carries our web address, but whether you found this website by choice or accident, let me take a moment to invite you into the world of amateur dramatics at village level. NADS is based in the village of Newick, East Sussex, UK. The village lies on the old pilgrims route from Chichester to Canterbury and was once very much an agricultural and horticultural area surrounded by iron production (some centuries ago) and lying not far from the famous Ashdown Forest (in fact a heathland once used for hunting and part of the ancient forest of Anderida). Village claims to fame include the 'Leveller Gooseberry', Robert Baden-Powell the first chief scout and Sir Dirk Bogarde, film actor as our NADS President.
NADS as it is commonly known has been in existence since 1928 under the able leadership of Lionel Cox a local nurseryman who’s passion for theatre led him to build a theatre in Newick (the present village hall) in 1932 to mark the birth of his only son Derek. The society has performed many productions since then ranging from drama to comedy to musicals. Newick is a friendly place with a plethora of clubs and societies and a well supported parish church. Many village folk belong to several different local organisations and as a result these people are very busy! This is the modern world and while we still don't have street lighting we did acquire piped natural gas some years ago and many village people commute to work or even pilot planes from Gatwick Airport!
So, where does Newick Amateur Dramatic Society stand now? Well, we are a small but dedicated band of volunteers from all walks of life who enjoy coming together to work hard creating great theatre. From the original conception with the inevitable production meetings to rehearsals, then the propmaking and setbuilding through to the actual performances in front of an expectant and loyal audience and finally the 'breakdown' when the set is destroyed and everything put away until the next time.
In between there are committee meetings to plan future productions and Society members make up regular parties to go and see amateur or professional theatre shows. Then there is the much enjoyed NADS Summer Barbeque where members can meet, chat and just 'chill out' without having to 'talk shop'.
We are always looking forward to the next production and the challenges it will pose, much cogitation and discussion is required before we are ready to put our plans into action. NADS are also very keen to encourage our Youth section NADYS (Newick Amateur Dramatic Youth Society) who in 2006 produced 'Hound of The Baskervilles' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (once a resident of nearby Crowborough) featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and also a lifesize puppet interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'Little Tin Soldier' both had teenage directors and an all teen or young cast but benefitting from the protective umbrella and the help the NADS Society can give. NADS as a working society has now developed from from the traditional two shows per per year to three in 2006 and beyond, two adult NADS and one NADYS.
So please take some time to check out the various pages on this site, we hope you will find it interesting and of course come back anytime you want the latest NADS info.
Kind regards from NADS and the NADYS
