Janakpur

Named after the legendary King Janak Janakpur, a city in Nepal‘s eastern Terai, is a Hindu pilgrimage site with an ancient heritage.
Janakpur was once the capital of an ancient kingdom called Mithila, whose territory extended into the present-day North Indian state of Bihar. Following the split between Nepal and the East India Company in 1816, the northern parts of Mithila, including Janakpur, were merged with Nepal. The southern region went to India as northern Bihar. Today Janakpur still remains the centre of Maithil culture in Nepal.
