Another World Series sweep!
Sox really came up huge in nearly every aspect over the last seven games. Got to say, though, from this Sox-fan’s viewpoint, as great as this is - it’s completely different than it was in 2004. I guess I am a bit surprised by this.
That 2004 World Series was brutal. There wasn’t a moment in that series where I wasn’t nervous. I mean, I believed in the team, but I couldn’t really believe that it was happening. Only after the series was over did I realize how completely the Sox dominated the Cardinals that year. While it was happening, every game was chewing on my every nerve. When they finally won, the release was incredible. Don’t think any sports moment in my life will top that year.
This year’s World Series win was, well, almost expected. Sure, the Indians were kicking our butts and things looked bleak - but even then I wasn’t gripping. Almost had the attitude that if it didn’t happen this year, well, we can get them next year. Where did that attitude come from? Used to think - if we don’t take advantage of THIS chance and don’t do it THIS year, then we will NEVER do it. That’s how I felt in 2003 and 2004.
This year when when the Sox made it to the Series, I completely expected them to win. Felt really confident the entire time -- except for when I saw Gagne warming up in the bullpen in Game 4 and Okajima gave up the 2-run homer. But other then that brief stretch, I enjoyed the ride much more this time around and didn’t doubt that the Sox would prevail.
This is great, but it doesn’t compare to the release and the joy that followed 2004’s win. Don’t get me wrong - I am loving this. But I am already looking forward to next season and having a full year of Ellsbury, a healthy Ortiz and Daisuke in his second year. I think I now expect this every year. Go Sox!
(BTW, I think I’ll feel differently with the Patriots this year. I feel like they are going for their place in history and if they don’t win the Superbowl this year, I will be crushed.)
Wow. Two World Series Sweeps in the last four years. I guess it hasn’t really sunk in yet. Outstanding. What an amazing time for Boston sports fans.
