Mark’s Blog

It’s been a hectic last month.  Layoffs and health issues have been putting me in a foul mood -- too foul to be blogging.  But I just had a good visit from my mom, Joss Whedon has a new series and I’m playing basketball again....so I’m in a better frame of mind.

Ok, so the layoffs.  As most of you have probably heard, TI laid off 12% of it’s work force near the end of January.  It was brutal.  I lost friends, colleagues and even basketball teammates.  Also lost the person who helps me the most on a weekly basis and that will make for a long year.  She was really good at her job and it underscored how bad things have gotten that people like her had to be let go.

Thanks to all of you who called and emailed me to make sure I was ok and still had a job!  I really do appreciate it.

So, have you caught the pilot of the Dollhouse?  New Joss Whedon show!  Is it possible for it to be better than I expected but still be a disappointment?   I guess I was afraid it would be terrible - which it isn’t (I like it,) but it wasn’t nearly as good as I would expect from Joss.

I like the overall story and the idea -- I think it provides a lot of great possibilities.  Eliza was good.  Joss was able to create a couple of good moments in the opener where you either felt empathy for Echo or concern about what would happen, but one of Joss’ strength is writing characters and getting people invested in them....how will he get us to bond with someone with a different personality every week?   But I think Joss will be able to do that.  For me, the biggest thing missing in the pilot was the humor.  As in, where was it?  Did anything funny happen in the pilot?  Was there a single funny line of dialogue?  WHERE WAS THE JOSS HUMOR?  So I liked it and still have high hopes - but it’s far short of what I was hoping for.

Just hoping that it will survive the season.  Reviews aren’t that great and ratings were pretty low.  Dollverse has all the info.

Anyone else see it?  What did you think?
Couldn’t fid a picture of Eliza from the pilot of Dollhouse where she was wearing that remarkably short white skirt....but hopefully this one will do.

Layoffs and the Dollhouse
