Music of the World with David McBurnie - January 23, 2009 at 10:00am
Today I celebrate my 20th anniversary of broadcasting on KPFA FM in Berkeley with a special program to commemorate the inauguration of President Barack Obama. I worked in the Silicon Valley for Obama office as a volunteer for six months. Our office made over 500,000 phone calls to get out the vote, as well as sending door-to-door teams out to Nevada, Colorado, and South West Indian Tribal Counsels.
In the first hour, we listen to a cd that I’ve just produced with my colleagues the Center for the Divine Feminine at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. It features the music of San Francisco Bay Area women who compose and perform spiritual and healing music. Thanks to these generous artists for letting us put their work into a new compilation called Voices of the Feminine.
In the second hour, we listen to music from the roots of President Obama. We’ll hear sounds like he might have grown up with, from Hawaii, Indonesia, Kenya, other parts of Africa, and beyond.
I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to bring roots and traditional music to the air for the past twenty years on KPFA FM in Berkeley, KALW in San Francisco, the CBC in Toronto, KZSU Stanford University, and KKUP in Santa Clara. I first went on the air in December of 1988.

“There’s No One as Irish as Barack O’Bama”
O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare and O'Hara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama
From the old Blarney Stone to the green Hill of Tara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama
You don't believe it, I hear you say
Barack's as Irish as was JFK
His granddaddy’s daddy came from Moneygall
A small Irish village, known to you all.
He’s as Irish as bacon and cabbage and stew
He’s Hawaiian, Kenyan, American too
If he succeeds, and he has a chance
I’m sure our Barack will do Riverdance
From Kerry and Cork to old Donegal
Let’s hear it for Barack, from old Moneygall
From the Lakes of Killarney to old Connemara
There’s no one as Irish as Barack OBama
Tooral - U Tooral U Tooral U Toor a lama
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama
