In this Problem Solving Groupwork activity, students break into groups of four to study different aspects of life in the West. Each group of students is assigned to study and portray in a mini-drama the life and times of one group of Westerners—Mormons, 49er’s, frontier women, Chinese Americans, the Donner Party, railroad owners, African American pioneers, and cowboys/vaqueros. Each group is given a picture and primary, secondary, and literary sources to help them create the mini-dramas.
