today’s front pages

Lots of good business section fronts have popped up over at News Page Designer — maybe my fellow biz geeks are coming out of the closet. If so, fantastic!
My handful of regular visitors know I love the tab format, but I rarely
get to see past the front page, so I was delighted to see some pages posted by Amy Speer of the Rocky Mountain News. To me, the best tab design is like the best broadsheet design: It’s clean and simple and grabs you right away. That’s what I like about both of these pages (either of which could work as a centerpiece on a broadsheet page). Here’s more of Amy’s work.
I expect great work from the Mercury News business and tech sections, and Chris Strach doesn’t disappoint.
I love having fun with a section flag, and he does that to nice effect on the cable dragon page. (My apologies, I don’t know who the illustrator is, or if it’s Chris. Can’t read the small type on these files.) There’s a lot going on in these pages, but they’re not cluttered. Very nice.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has a nice look to it, and that carries through to the Biz pages. The clipper story is one lots of us are likely to do, in light of rising food prices, and this was a nice approach. (But, ow: Whoever that hand belongs to had to be hurting after that photo shoot.) These pages are by Rebekah Monson.
And finally ... My last batch comes from the design team at the Omaha World Herald. I don’t believe I’ve ever envied the Cornhuskers anything (no offense), but the chance to do a blow-out special section on the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting? What self-respecting geek wouldn’t love that?
First, here’s the cover of the special section previewing the meeting. I love the quiz aspect of it. I’m a sucker for a quiz.
And here’s opening day. The second page proves Berkshire Hathaway is all about performance — even performance art.
