Missale Manuscripta Miniatures - complete

Missale Romanum of the Friars of St. Francis of Assisi, written and illuminated at Bruges, Belgium and commissioned by the Guild of St. Mary Magdalene, also at Bruges.

Saint Mary Magdalene is a composite of the personalities and life stories of a number of saintly women who have been identified with her in the course of tradition. She is the sister of Martha and Lazarus who lived in Bethany and who received Jesus in their home. She is also the woman whom Jesus exorcised as she was reputed to be possessed by seven devils; she is the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with precious ointment; the woman who stood beside the cross and who was among the women to first see the risen Christ. She is also a saint who was the subject of many ‘miracle’ legends in France during the 11th century. She was believed to have been in Marseille with her brother and sister on a pilgrimage, where she converted a crowd of pagans with her sermons. She is also believed to have lived in the Provence for more than 30 years, fasting and doing penance in solitude, before being taken to heaven.

This Provençal legend was described in the Legenda Aurea (Golden Legends), the most important medieval book on the lives of saints.

The richly decorated manuscript shows a full portrait of Mary Magdalene holding her typical attribute - a jar of ointment - in her hand, encircled by scenes from the Provençal legend.
