Rysum organ 1457

In Rysum stands the oldest extant playable organ in Germany. Combined, the building phases of 1457 and 1513 resulted in an instrument in the Hanseatic Gothic tradition. As early as the second half of the 15th century, the region around the Dollart bay was home to flourishing organ culture with many organs in monasteries and city churches, as well as smaller village churches. Alone in the small region between the cities of Emden and Norden known as the Krummhörn, there exists evidence for ten Gothic organs. Still possesing its original pipework, the Late Gothic organ in Rysum is the only extant larger instrument on which the significant 15th and 16th century repertoire can be heard.

Pierre Attaingnant printed seven collections of keyboard works in 1530/1531.


Among the most important documents for the historian of keyboard music in general and French Renaissance keyboard music in particular are the seven volumes of tablatures published by Attaingnant at the beginning of 1531.

1. Dixneuf chansons musicales reduictes en la tabulature des Orgues Espinettes Manichordions, et telz semblables instrumentz....Idibus Januarii 1530 (1531).

2. Vingt et cinq chansons musicales reduictes en la tabulature des Orgues Espinettes Manichordions, et telz semblables instrumentz musicaulx....Kal Februarii 1530 (1531).

3. Vingt et six chansons musicales reduictes en la tabulature des Orgues Espinettes Manichordions, et telz semblables instrumentz musicaulx....Non Februarii 1530 (1531).

4. Quartorze Gaillardes neuf Pavennes, sept Branles et deux Basses Dances le tout reduict de musique en la tabulature du ieu Dorgues Espinettes Manichordions et telz semblables instrumentz musicaulx....(Februarii 1531?).

What the reason may have been for his sudden activity in the publishing of keyboard music cannot now be known, but it is significant that Attaingnant in these seven volumes covered practically all of the functions of keyboard music in his time, including as he did chanson transcriptions, pure dance music and various kinds of compositions designed specially for ultilization within the church. With the production of these seven volumes, Attaingnant’s interest in the printing of music for this medium seems to have ceased entirely, for no other volumes of keyboard music from his press have been preserved and there is no evidence to show that there were others.
