Numbers up by 300%!
When we started the project Dr Toure estimated that 550 women would be pregnant in Bellaferandi in one year. Based on 550 women our initial aims were :-

Specific Objectives
1    Increase the rate of first antenatal visit (CPN1) from 30% to 60% 2009 and 80% 2010
2    Increase the frequency of antenatal visits  ( CPN3) from 25% to 40% 2009 and 50% 2010
3    Increase the rate of assisted deliveries by qualified attendant from 20% to 30% 2009 and 50% 2010

Outcomes 2009-2010
  1. 1.Over 1000 women attended the first antenatal clinic (CPN1) implying that the population in Bellaferandi is much bigger than first thought.
  2. 2. 640 women attended for 3 antenatal visits (CPN3) which is again beyond our expectations. (Planned to       increase from 138 to 220)
  3. 3.The rate of assisted deliveries rose from 20% of 550 deliveries  to 48% of 1000 deliveries.
  4.
These results were great. We decided to keep the project the same for the next two years to consolidate these results and hope it becomes routine for women to attend 3 antenatal clinics in Timbuktu.

Unexpected results are that this increase in attendances should increase the income to the Health Centre . This gives the ASACO (elected health board) more money to spend on health/staff next year. We hope by stabilising this income for 3 years they will be able to develop services  or even take on the costs of this project themselves.

We have checked that there are enough staff to cope with the increased demand and there are. We will continue to assess demand but our aims for next year are to maintain numbers attending CPN1 and increase numbers attending CPN3 . We also aim to further increase the number of births attended by qualified attendants to over 50% of 1000 women.
