Student Learning Supports
“Reducing Barriers to Learning & Teaching
The Student Assistance Family Engagement (SAFE) Program is a Learning Support Component developed by TRECA under the leadership of Superintendent Mike Carder and Key TDA Staffers John Shank and Josie Drushal. It was developed to supplement TRECA’s academic program and activities by assisting in identifying, preventing, and then reducing barriers to student learning and teaching. The program model focuses around three main components: on-line resources, face-to-face contacts, and local partnerships and linkages for information, referrals, and services. The program was developed and is coordinated by Michael F. Ring MA/PC. who serves as the Director of Social Services for TRECA and its SAFE Program.

WE LISTEN: Children today have a lot to deal with. Helping kids address problems outside the classroom affects how well they do inside the classroom. Childen achieve more if they feel safe, secure, and are having their physical and emotional needs met.

WE ACT: Learning Support Specialists try to determine why students are having problems, whether academic, behavioral, physical, or social-emotional

WE CARE: Learning Support Specialist also work with parents, who often times do not know where to turn when faced with such problems. Specialists can make personal contact, make home visits, and work with parents to help find and access any resources they might nedd for themselves, their child, their family.

COMMUNITY EFFORT: Personal and family problems can best be solved through a Community effort. The TRECA-SAFE program provides consultation, technical assistance, and information and referral on individual psycho-social-emotional and family problems that may be serving as barriers to learning and pose health and safety concerns for our students.
