The Detroit Urban Farming Documentary
The Detroit Urban Farming Documentary
In the shadows of a once great american city, hundreds of hectares of vacant land are being transformed into gardens and farm plots one small lot at a time. Local citizens, college students, and restaurant owners are buying parcels in some of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Detroit and planting carrots, beets, tomatoes, squash, mustard greens, corn, watermelon, strawberries, and garlic. The gardens are creating hope in the communities where they are planted. There is a blossoming awareness that the fertile soil that lie underneath the ruins of this once majestic city may be the key to it’s future.
This documentary will explore the urban prairie and urban farming phenomenon that is happening in some of the poorest and decimated areas in the city of Detroit. In the age of the corporate mega-farms, where food is more expensive that ever, and neighborhood stores are scarce, the people of this city are growing their own food and learning about the importance of the environment, healthy eating, and entrepreneurship.
