Dr Paul Morrison - Psychologist
Dr Paul Morrison - Psychologist
I grew up in Ireland and lived there for almost 20 years. I then moved to the green belt just outside London. I have a long-standing interest in mental health. I worked for several years as a mental health and general nurse in different parts of the UK and then as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Cardiff College of Medicine teaching psychology and mental health to health care practitioners. I completed studies in psychology, teaching and counselling in Bangor, Cardiff, Sheffield and Sydney. I moved to Brisbane (QUT) in 1995 and then the University of Canberra in 1999 where I currently work.
After 20 years with a primary focus on education and research I was drawn back to clinical work and helping people to address the problems in their lives. While much of my earlier training focused on the “diagnosis and treatment” model of care, which invests power in professionals, I wanted to work with people in a more holistic and collaborative way while drawing on the latest research evidence to support my practice.
The ideas I use to inform my psychology practice these days are drawn from narrative and solution-focused perspectives. This approach helps to reduce distress and enhance personal wellbeing and coping strategies. I joined colleagues at the Karuna Centre in 2005 and practice there on a part-time basis. I have experience working with people and families with mental health issues across the life-span, interpersonal relationship concerns and work-related stress.
