Ah when she comes walking over
Now I've been waitin' to show her
Crimson and clover over and over
Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the WHO and
Dr. Siti Fadilah Supari, Indonesian Health Minister and Member, WHO Executive Board
Just thought it would be worth reminding people that Dr. Supari quoted
...Margaret Chan, the WHO chief, as saying a "criminal in the WHO" who sent samples or data to the US government's secretive research laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, was "terminated".
Still no denial of this from Dr. Chan.
The fact that Dr. Supari has accused the US of using H5N1 samples from Indonesia to create biological weapons hasn't dissuaded the public health establishment from inviting her to talk at important meetings, like, for example, the Medsin Global Health Conference 2008 where she spoke in a Plenary Session on Disaster Relief and Emerging Epidemics with Dr. David Nabarro, Senior UN System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza.
I confess, I'm not in Public Health, so I don't know what standards of behaviour apply to this field. I do know that no-one in most fields of biomedical research would be willing to share a stage with someone like Dr. Supari. In fact, every prominent member of the establishment would condemn her statements in the strongest possible terms. But I guess things are a bit different in Public Health.
