These are strange times in Indonesia. As Pixie pointed out in a recent blog, there is an "unofficial' cluster occuring in Riau province that may be quite large. The WHO has sent a team to investigate. So, the Indonesian Health Minister, Siti Fadilah Supari, can be expected to be under a bit of stress.
How much stress? Well, on Friday K from Mi posted a machine translation on PFI Forum of an Indonesian news story in detikcom about a speech given by Health Minister Supari. In it she is reported as saying:
For example the bird flu virus H5N1 emerged resulting from deliberateness from the research group in America.
Machine translations can be difficult to interpret. But Indo Newshounds have a lot of experience extracting meaning from Toggletext translations. And they are unanimous in their interpretation - Health Minister Supari is accusing US scientists of deliberately modifying H5N1 to make it more virulent. The motive? To sell poor countries like Indonesia H5N1 vaccine for exorbitant costs.
Now, I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but it has got to be credible. The H5N1 vaccine business represents a tiny fraction of the total revenues of pharmaceutical companies. Deliberately making a virus that could kill over 1 billion people, which is what an H5N1 virus would do if it went pandemic with its current lethality, would be like the US launching all of its nuclear missiles at the cities of the world so that potassium iodide manufacturers could make a higher profit. Ridiculous, just plain ridiculous.
But strange behaviour on the part of Indonesian government officials doesn't end with the far-out conspiracy theories of Health Minister Supari. Dr Marius Widjajarta (Chairman of Health Empowerment for the Indonesian Consumer) wants to take Indonesia out of the WHO because Indonesia has asked for, but apparently not gotten back, viruses that they had previously sent the WHO (hat-tip Pixie). Mind you, Health Minister Supari is on the Executive Board of the WHO. And the WHO is in Indonesia right now helping the Indonesian government assess the Riau cluster, but apparently without coordinating with the Health Ministry (hat-tip Commonground). Oh, wait a minute...
I don't read minds, but if I were to guess, the behaviour of Health Minister Supari and her colleagues suggests that the situation in Indonesia is worse than the official reports would indicate. Maybe, much, much worse.
