What is Bomba?
Developed at the end of the 17th Century, Emerges as a very important expression to the slavery system and a form of spiritual and political strength. Its origins can be traced back to the Bantu tribe (Africa) and the african diaspora within the Caribbean.
“Bailes de Bomba (Bomba dances) were gatherings where the dancer would challenge the drummer (primo) while los buleadores and cua would play one the bomba rhythms. Bomba was used to celebrate events such as baptisms, funerals and marriages. It also served to communicate, among slaves, details of rebellions within the coastal sugar canes plantations. More than 20 different rhythms, which evolved from four different regions in Puerto Rico-- Norte, Sur, Loiza and Mayaguez can be identified. Examples are sica, yuba, guembe, paule, holandes, lero, seis corrido, danue, gracima, cocobale, corve etc.
