Frame Rate:
Number of frames per second. Typical speed for standard 8mm and super 8 film-18fps, but may have been filmed from 2-24 fps. depending on the original camera used. Standard TV (NTSC) uses a frame rate or 29.97fps

Film Gate:
Mechanical component of a projector. An opening that allows light to pass through as film moves behind the opening. Originally designed smaller than the actual developed area of the individual film frames. Enlarged on our equipment for transfer use.

Media suitable for transfer:
Used for archiving digital file.

  1. DVD -    Although single sided DVD’s (capacity of 4.7gb) can accommodate up to 1 hour of high quality video, archived video files require approx. 12gb per hour. This results in only 20 min. per DVD for archive purpose.
  2. MiniDV Tape -    Up to 1 hour of archived video per tape. We use Sony Premium tapes. These can be played back using video cameras or players compatible with the MiniDV format. This can be the most compatible for transfer when played back and captured within computer editing systems.
  3. Hard Drive -    As an option, we will transfer the digital archived files to a user supplied hard drive. This provides the best media in terms of speed when transferring to and used within editing software.

Each of these preserve the data file as a digital archive which
can be used for future editing.
Deterioration  of the archive is only subject to the lifespan of the media.
