As a composer, Michael is fascinated with technology and interested in designing sound for commercials, video games and film score. Michael has recently completed a collaborative effort with dynamic marching, writing and producing the educational DVD “In the Mix.” He was commissioned to write an original composition for the 2009 Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention. The piece, “BLOOM” written for 7 percussionists and electronic soundtrack was premiered to wondrous applause from a standing room only audience.
Michael’s love of music and desire to succeed have provided him the energy and opportunity to continue formally studying his craft and he is a student at Butler University pursuing a degree in theory and composition under the tutelage of composers-in-residence, Dr. Michael Schelle and Dr. Frank Felice.
Besides being a full time student, Michael’s current daily activities include acting as one of two percussion specialists for the Carmel-Clay school district in Carmel, Indiana. In 2001, the marching ensemble was named the BOA AAA National Champion. In 2005, the Carmel marching ensemble was named the Bands of America Grand National Champion and since 1999, has only finished out of the top five one time. Carmel’s top wind ensemble was chosen to perform at the 2005 Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention. He is also one of two percussion designers/arrangers for The Cavaliers drum and bugle corps. Finally, Michael is an adjunct member of the music faculty at Marian University where he teaches part time.
He currently has compositions published by Row-Loff Publications, Yamaha Sounds of Summer, Tap Space Publications, Key Poulan Music, Drop 6 Media, The Hal Leonard Corporation, Innovative Percussion, Marching Show Concepts and JKS Music. Michael is a Yamaha artist/clinician as well as a signature drum stick artist with Innovative Percussion. He also proudly endorses LP Percussion, EVANS drumheads, Zildjian cymbals, and Sibelius notation software.
Mr. McIntosh is a highly sought after clinician/educator and has performed clinics for TMEA, OMEA, DCI, WGI, MEPA, IPA, Music for All, Yamaha Sounds of Summer, Yamaha Japan and PASIC. As an educator, he has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. In 2008, Michael toured Japan presenting multi-media clinics on percussion techniques and digital design. He also represents the General Effect caption as one of three, peer elected judge representatives on the WGI steering committee and advisory board.
Michael was originally trained in the world of artistic pageantry and is formally one of two percussion designer/arrangers and the former music coordinator for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. Michael worked with a talented staff and played a role in designing such summer smash productions as “Caravan”, “Connexus”, and the Bluecoats 2007 production “Criminal.” His sense of musicianship and fashion forward sound mapping created a very modern approach to the drum corps idiom and contributed to one of the most competitively successful and educationally rewarding environments in recent Bluecoats history.
As a young musician, Michael was a saxophone player at Brentwood high school in Brentwood, TN. In his sophomore year, he was asked to join the drum line and studied with Robert Salimbene and Alan Rice. Three years later, Mike performed with the prestigious Blue Devils Drum and Bugle corps playing snare and eventually aging out as the percussion section leader. Michael’s tenure with the Blue Devils afforded him the opportunity to study with Tom and Catherine Float, Fred Sanford, Scott Johnson, Keith Higgins, Rick Rodriguez and Bob Bollman. In his final year of performing, he was named the Outstanding Blue Devil Percussionist for 1990.
Amusing himself as a member of the award winning but slightly dangerous University of North Texas drum line, Michael won two PASIC percussion championships and the PASIC college snare Individuals competition in 1991. At North Texas, Mike had the opportunity to learn from percussion educators and artists such as Dr. Robert Schietroma, Ron Fink, Erik Johnson and marching percussion legends Paul Rennick, Jeff Prosperie, Ralph Hardimon and Thom Hannum. From 1992-1996, he taught the Nite Express Drum and Bugle corps capturing a DCI World Championship Division II-A percussion trophy in 1994. In 1997, Michael taught under Ralph Hardimon at the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle corps. 1998 to 2003 entailed a role as the snare tech/percussion caption head for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps. Mike taught for and worked closely with Bret Kuhn and was lucky to be part of a team instrumental in winning two DCI High Percussion awards and three back-to-back drum corps world championships in 2000, 01, and 02. In 2000 and 2001 respectively, The Cavaliers percussion ensemble received two successive perfect 10’s in musicality.
Mr. McIntosh resides in Brownsburg, Indiana and has been married to Joy McIntosh since May, 2002. Joy was also a student at Butler University where she graduated in May, 2009 with her masters degree as a Physician Assistant. Joy and Mike share their home with Rex the dog and cats Bella, Houdini and Psycho...all of whom they love very much!
